Success Of Change - Business Training for Women

Woman diversified Her Business as per Market Demand and Suitability

Nirmala is a member of the Saraswati SHG, which is having 20 members in Kinall village. She was doing tailoring as a part time business. She attended the enterprise training and selected the business idea of roti and pickle making, mainly because she is skilled at roti and pickle making and also found that there is good market demand for rotis, both in the Khanavalis (Hotels) and the individual households of Kinal. Another aspect that Nirmala found favorable was that roti making does not require much investment and she has the advantage of getting wood for her stove from her own fields.

Now, on an average Nirmala is supplying about 2000 rotis to hotels and individual houses per month @ Rs.1.50/roti. She is getting regular orders from two hotels and she supplies to individual houses on demand basis. She is getting a net profit of Rs. 1500/- per month from the roti making business and also able to carry on her household work. From her tailoring business Nirmala is earning about Rs.300-500/- per month depending upon the season; during the festival and marriage seasons she earns more.

Along with this Nirmala has just started making pickles with raw tamarind which is a seasonal business. During her training she was able to plan the business aspects like how much jowar flour is needed to make 100 rotis and how to price it per roti and which costs need to be added while pricing. Nirmala says that she has learnt to successfully conduct more than one income generating activity simultaneously, so that she is able to get a regular income for her family. Now, Nirmala is planning to set up a popcorn making business along with these three businesses and is looking for purchasing of popcorn making machine. As an entrepreneur she plans to buy raw material (jowar grain, raw tamarind, maize) during the season at a cheaper rate to reduce the cost of production and increase her profits. She says, "I learned all these business related aspects which are taught as part of calculating costing, pricing and profits during the enterprise training. Now I am able to earn from three different sources." more similar stories.

A cost for making this change is Rs. 14,300 (318$). (view the cost breakup)
