Success Of Change - Children's Education

Handicapped boy Found Means to travel out of the village to continue his higher education…

Ramesh (13) is the sixth child of Lakshumavva (45), who is a Devadasi woman living with her parents in Chukankal village. Two of her children got married and were living in their in-law’s house. One child dropped out from the school and was employed in a loandlord's house to graze sheep and goats. The main income of her family comes from her wages and the little support they receive from the landlord for grazing the goats (mainly in the form of food grains).

Ramesh is a handicapped boy who completed 5th class in the local school. Lakshumavva has no idea how he could be educated further because the local school only goes up to 5th standard and to study further he has to travel 4 km to Koppal town, the closest place from her village. As he is a handicapped boy, additional expenses will be needed along with the school expenses, so she decided to stop his education at 5th standard, although the child wants to continue his studies.

During a field officer's visit to the group meeting Sampark staff came to know about this issue. He discussed with Lakshumavva and committed to provide a special walking stick, bus pass, school fees, books, notebooks, bags and a uniform for 5 years, i.e. till 10th standard.

After these arrangements Lakshumavva was convinced to send him to school in Koppal. He was admitted into 6th standard and he is continuing school. Now he is in 8th standard and studying well. He says: "I am so happy that I am continuing my studies and managed to travel to Koppal for schooling by myself". more similar stories.
